Wild Stories The Best

Wild Stories: The Best of Men’s Journal

For the past decade, Men’s Journal has set the standard for travel and adventure writing by publishing the work of America’s finest authors and literary journalists. Wild Stories collects thirty-two of the best pieces to appear in the magazine, written by its most esteemed contributors, including Jim Harrison, Sebastian Junger, P. J. O’Rourke, Rick Bass, Thomas McGuane, George Plimpton, Hampton Sides, Doug Stanton, Tim Cahill, and Mark Bowden. Each of the four chapters in Wild Stories showcases Men’s Journal’s diversity and taut storytelling power. “The Adventures” is a series of razor-sharp travel narratives, from a road trip across India on the perilous Grand Trunk Road to a search for grizzlies in Romania. “The Sporting Life” is a look into obscure corners of the sports world, where golf’s bush-league wannabes try to make it to the PGA and a group of cyclists out-suffer one another in pursuit of the mythic Hour Record. “Men’s Lives” includes profiles of singular adventurers such as Yvon Chouinard and Ned Gillette, and captures the rewards of such quintessentially male traditions as building a cabin on your own plot of land. And “The Reporting” collects definitive accounts of the most newsworthy disasters, as well as riveting dispatches from war zones in Somalia, Sudan, and Colombia, and from environmental hot spots in Alaska and Montana.Commemorating Men’s Journal’s tenth anniversary, Wild Stories is a diverse and entertaining anthology that explores the magazine’s basic creed: Life is an adventure. From the first pageto the last, these are stories you’ll never forget. Author Biography:

Kyle Hollingsworth Band

Kyle Hollingsworth Band
Event on 2012-03-08 19:00:00
With Special Guest Euforquestra

Join us from 7p-8p, we will be tasting Kyle's Breckenrdige Brewery beer.

String Cheese Incident keyboardist and avid brewer Kyle Hollingsworth heads for the high country of Colorado this March with Kyle Hollingsworth Band to sport the slopes with his BrewSki Tour, featuring a one-time-only craft beer collaboration from Kyle & Breckenridge Brewery on tap at each show. Fort Collins' Euforquestra will open each night. And because Kyle and Coloradoans love beer, one keg of the collaboration brew will be available for free for the first hour at all shows, while supplies last.
Thirty years ago, Kyle Hollingsworth set out on a career in music. Since then, with a wealth of desire and an abundance of ability, Hollingsworth has established himself as a formidable and versatile music talent, with the ability to contribute, collaborate, compose, and communicate on a number of levels and within a vast spectrum of musical environments. Today, as a member of acclaimed jam masters The String Cheese Incident, Hollingsworth is revered by both peers and fans for his ability to write and perform in a mosaic of styles, from rock to classical, ragtime to bebop. Playing in SCI has allowed him unrestricted access to the world of music, and has bestowed on him the kind of fearlessness a composer needs to flirt with such disparate genres. Those who"ve seen SCI know that they can jerk from funk to bluegrass on a chord change. "In the jam world, where there are no set ways of doing things, we"re not afraid to move in and out of genres," he says, "and because of that I"ve learned to be creative, not only onstage but in the studio. I can get on board with something pretty quickly. You have to."

His recent release, titled The There"s Now, finds the musician coming in to his own. With solid song material and a slamming new band, Kyle is making his mark in the new, always-evolving music scene. Then There"s Now delivers a blend of vocal and instrumental tunes and seamlessly displays his growth as a musician and as a songwriter.

Euforquestra

Euf rquestra is a seven-member unit that relocated to Fort Collins, CO in Summer 2008 after spending five years in Iowa City, IA. The band"s own brand of High Intensity Global Dance Music is a percussion and horn driven blend of modern music that fuses afrobeat, reggae, dub, funk, rock, soca and highlife with traditional sounds from Cuba, Brazil, West Africa and beyond. This is cutting edge music that ignites dance floors across the country with a sound that "explodes, dances and melts in your ear with sheer bliss" (Chris M. Slawecki; www.allaboutjazz.com).

With three full-length albums to their name and a relentless tour schedule (averaging over 110 shows annually), Euf rquestra has become one of the hottest bands on Colorado"s live music circuit and has created a national presence with performances all over the country at clubs, theaters, community events, and many great festivals including Electric Forest, Wakarusa, moe. Summer Camp, 80/35, Sweet Pea Festival, NedFest, Groovefest, Montana Beer Festival, the Iowa City Jazz Festival and their own Camp Euforia (hosting the 8th annual in 2011). The band has also been fortunate enough to collaborate with and support many other nationally touring artists including Page McConnell of Phish, Kyle Hollingsworth of String Cheese Incident, the Gin Blossoms, The Motet, John Brown"s Body, Toubab Krewe, Great American Taxi and many more.

Euf rquestra"s latest studio album "Soup" was released for free online and has been downloaded over 10,000 times since its release in Fall 2009. After adding new members Ben Soltau and Matt Wright (bass and keys, respectively) the band shows no sign of slowing with multiple album and EP releases in the works and busy 2011 tour schedule. Find them online, spread the word, see them live and find out what they put in that Soup…

Modern Time Machines (record release party) – The Pity Party – The Monolators – LA Font

Modern Time Machines (record release party)

Modern Time Machines' blend of gauzy space rock atmospherics + pop songrwiting sensibilities have drawn comparisons to Sonic Youth, Medicine, and Silversun Pickups, yet the sound remains uniquely their own. They combine '60s psychedelia, boy/girl vocal harmonies, feedback-laced love songs and yes, time travel, into a riotous melange of beautiful noise.

After receiving regular airplay on KROQ 106.7FM Locals Only, and being named a "Band to Watch Out for in 2011” by Radio Free Silver Lake, the band established themselves as local favorites with its live shows, playing L.A. venues such as The Satellite and The Glass House alongside acts including Light FM, Nightmare Air, Superhumanoids, and Useless Keys, as well as touring Austin, TX in 2011 for the SXSW music festival.

Kevin Bronson of Buzzbands.la has stated that Modern Time Machines' “cocktail of fuzzed-out dissonance and cirrus melody gets sweeter with each outing…fans of Swervedriver, Medicine and [Smashing Pumpkins] should take note."

The band celebrates the release of its highly anticipated debut album “Continuity Girl”, with a record release show at The Satellite on March 2, 2012. Co-produced by Josiah Mazzaschi (Light FM, The Pity Party, William Reid of Jesus and Mary Chain), and Steven Rhodes (Silversun Pickups, Darker My Love, Twilight Sleep), “Continuity Girl” promises to make waves, enveloping the listener in frenzied, layered guitar + string soundscapes, and catchy, bittersweet vocal textures.
The Pity Party

The Pity Party are arguably one of the most innovative and intriguing bands in Los Angeles today. Heisenflei's ability to multi-task on drum/keys/and vocals simultaneously makes even the pros jealous. Pair that with M's hypnotic guitars and deep space melodies and you have a recipe for world domination. – Rock Insider

The Monolators, a trio from Los Angeles, recently issued Silver Cities, a double 12" EP, their 8th release since forming in Highland Park circa 2002. Silver Cities started from a challenge–it was one of a batch of songs written very quickly by Eli Monolator in May 2010 in an attempt to write and record a 5-song solo EP on an old 4-track deck in five days. The original version of the title song was spare, with just drum machine, one guitar, thudding bass, and vocals–but under the influence of (a) Krautrock cult group La Dusseldorf and (b) ABBA, the Monolators decided to re-record the song as a group using pianos, choral harmonies, synth leads, feedback, and swirling phaser effects. All of the other songs on the EP followed suit, and Luke Ehret (boxViolet)'s production allowed for a bigger, more orchestrated sound than anything the Monolators have yet attempted. For a band usually classified as 'garage rock' there's also a wider range of pop-informed and electronic styles than on previous Monolators records, from the Spaghetti Western/disco hybrid "I'll Be Glad When He's Gone" to the murky, dancey closer, a song about a girl with blue eyes, silver bangs, and a Ford pickup truck.

LA Font

"If the crackling, Pavement-informed indie rock on LA Font's forthcoming album "The American Leagues" feels like a breath of fresh air compared to all the noisy navel-gazing on the scene right now, it's because songwriter Danny Bobbe probably still feels like an outsider. Bobbe moved from Montana to L.A. just two years ago, and his prickly songs have the feel of a wiseguy who suddenly finds himself planted in hipster heaven (if not a homeless haven) and who responds by flaming, with guitar and in verse. It's reminiscent of other local favorites such as Rademacher, the Henry Clay People and Death to Anders, though none of them nails a baseball metaphor as LA Font does in the title track." – Kevin Bronson, buzzbands.la

"The band's garage-rock debut, 'The American Leagues,' smolders with 'Slanted and Enchanted'-style fuzz and spastic songs that threaten to run off the rails. Leading the charge is frontman Danny Bobbe, an Alaska native who arrived in L.A. by way of Montana who sings from a constant state of snarly irritation. His topics (and targets) of choice include girls, elitism and elitist girls; sounds like he's settling into L.A. just fine." – David Greenwald, L.A. Times Brand X
